Encouraging Environmental Awareness In the Upper Lynn Canal

Welcome to the Lynn Canal Conservation (LCC) web site. LCC is a grass roots conservation organization based in Haines, Alaska. Haines is located about 85 miles north of Juneau.

For over 30 years, LCC has been dedicated to fostering environmental awareness and protecting the natural environment and quality of life in our region.

• We helped establish the Chilkat Bald Eagle Preserve which is a critical fall and winter feeding area for the largest known gathering of bald eagles in the world (as many as 4000 eagles).
• We work to protect fish and wildlife habitat.
• We advocate for sustainable forestry and value added products.
• We helped establish the Tatshensheni Alsek World Heritage Park, saving the area from an ill-conceived mining project.
• We advocate protecting wildlife from impacts of helicopter tourism.
• We work to protect commercial, sport, and subsistence fisheries from toxic mining discharges at the Kensington Gold Mine.
• We advocate for tourism planning to minimize the impacts of industrial scale tourism.
• We advocate for responsible solid waste management in Haines and educated the community about the health hazards of incineration.
• We helped initiate the Chilkoot River Corridor planning project to protect the irreplaceable cultural and environmental resources in the area.
• We participated in encouraging Alaska cruises to serve wild Alaska salmon rather than farmed fish.
• We nurtured the birth and growth of Haines Friends of Recycling.
• We advocate for improved marine access via the Alaska Marine Highway rather than building a road north of Juneau

We continue to be successful because of the efforts of a dedicated group of volunteers and the support of our membership. Membership donations and Tee Shirt and Art Print sales help support our conservation work.
