Mom's Moose Pond ... Continued
(17 Mile Pond on Tok Cutoff)
All photos taken 5/3/03 just before dusk
... so they are kind of dark. There were 7 moose at the pond, but
1 crossed the road to lay down in the trees on the other side just as we
got there. It is quite a ways across the pond to where the moose
were - so I zoomed in as close as the camera would let me for some of these
pics.
A lonesome swan was swimming and eating ... and that is
ice you see in the back part of the photo! There was at least twice
as much ice there when we saw it the previous evening.
This is a muskrat swimming at the edge of the pond. Although
smaller than a beaver, they also make their houses in the water; so their
fur has many of the same qualities as found in beaver fur so that it can
repel the water from their body and keep them warm.
This is a view looking in a NE direction. It was getting
quite dusk by the time I took this pic, so it is difficult to make out
all 6 moose that are out there. That is part of the Alaska Range
in the background.
